It is our duty as adults to educate the children in our lives as much as we can about being fit and healthy so that they can live as long and happy a life as possible. Children learn by what they see and hear around them, so by instilling good, healthy habits in them at a young age, we prepare them for a happy life filled with the right things. We can teach them how to make intelligent choices about their health and why such decisions are correct. Here are some best ideas for teaching youngsters good healthy lifestyle habits.

Eat Together

Try to eat together at least once a day if at all feasible. It may be difficult since everyone is so busy, but if you stick with it, you will develop a pattern that will become a healthy habit for everyone involved. Eating together demonstrates to your children that you are developing healthy eating habits for yourself as much as for them and that you are setting a good example. They will see what a healthy portion size for an adult looks like and compare it to that of a kid, for example.

If you can include your children in the meal’s preparation and cooking, that’s even better since they’ll have a greater understanding of the healthy foods you’re making for them. If anything that might be considered ‘bad’ for you is included, explain why it is there (a little butter, sugar, or salt, for example, is actually a good thing) and why it is acceptable to have a little of this as long as the rest of the choices they make are healthy.

Go Outside

Choosing to spend time outdoors rather than indoors is another healthy lifestyle practice to instill in your children. If you have a yard, go outdoors and play some games. They could be sports games such as soccer or football, or they can be chasing games. You could even play hide and seek; the excitement of the game makes it thrilling, and being outdoors means there are many more places to hide.

You don’t need any fancy equipment to enjoy the outdoors with your children, just enough room for them to run about in and maybe a ball if they want to play a game that needs one. If you don’t have enough room in your yard, look for a public playing field or playground where you can take the kids to get some exercise. Getting your kid outdoors as often as possible, especially during the colder, wetter months, will significantly impact their health and outlook on life. Exercise becomes more enjoyable when it is turned into a game, and this is a wonderful habit to establish as early as feasible.

Investigate Extracurricular Activities

Extracurricular activities provide youngsters with many opportunities to meet new people, do new things, and improve their social skills. They can enable skills to shine, and children can learn how to live a healthy, happy life in a safe, secure setting. Meeting people they would not usually meet is another opportunity for them to learn new things, and it is quite conceivable that they could discover new ways to stay healthy. Perhaps you’ll decide to find a Royal Academy of Dance teacher, or you’ll enroll the child in a pottery class, or anything else.

Just because how and what they learn does not originate from you as a parent doesn’t mean it’s not a good idea, so listen to them if they want to explore other ways of staying healthy, and maybe you could learn something new as well.
